FDR dies

                                                                           Harry Truman

In 1945, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt passes away after four momentous terms in office, leaving Vice President Harry S. Truman in charge of a country still fighting the Second World War and in possession of a weapon of unprecedented and terrifying power.

Truman had rather large shoes to fill. FDR had presided over the Great Depression and most of World War II, leaving an indelible stamp on American politics for several decades. He also left Truman with the difficult decision of whether or not to continue to develop and, ultimately, use the atomic bomb. Shockingly, FDR had kept his vice president in the dark about the bomb’s development and it was not until Roosevelt died that Truman learned of the Manhattan Project.

Watch this  biography on FDR. (4.56)

Tell us one fact that you learned from the video. Do not repeat what a friend has already shared.

  1. One fact I learned about him from the video, that I found interesting, was the fact that he was the only US president to be elected four times. He must of been one heck of a guy. :)

    1. If only he could be president now… wouldn’t that be wonderful! No Trump, No President Obama… man it would be nice to have him again. :)

    2. I looked up when the presidential term limit was first applied, and it was February 21, 1947 that Congress passed the bill.
(What's so bad about Trump? He's better than Clinton IMO)

    3. I agree with that! But FDR would be better than either! And there is a lot of stuff wrong with Trunp's ideas, IMO

    4. True that. Trump is a businessman, so he will make decisions for our country depending on whether they will make him money or not. He doesn't have a very strong opinion on moral issues, like abortion, which is always a no-no. I would not vote for someone unless I know exactly what they stand for. Which is why if I was voting this year, Ted Cruz and Ben Carson are the top of the list.

      Another fun fact:
Trump had his own candy brand, Trump Chocolate.

    5. Exactly! I agree. If I was voting is probably vote for Ben Carson. And the fact that Trump had his own candy is so funny!! :)

  3. I learned that FDR married his 5th cousin! I think that's funny!

    1. It's gross to marry to your cousin. Genetics suggests that when two people with a similar consanguinity will result in more recessive traits, this includes birth defects, genetic disabilities, and heart problems. There is still a possibility that FDR's kids come without defects.

  4. I learned that he was an only child. I also learned he began the New Deal within 100 days of being elected. The people probably saw immediately saw that he was a man of action.

  5. I did not know that FDR was born in the high class society. Even then, he helps and understands the poor.

  6. I didn't know that he had had five children, its sad that their father died and I wonder if he was still alive when they got married?!

  12. I am not sure if this counts as a valid one fact about FDR, but here goes. FDR had a cousin who was Theodore Roosevelt, aka, Teddy. Now, Teddy was the NY State Governor in 1898, FDR was NY State Senator in 1910. Teddy was the US Navy Assistant Secretary in 1897, FDR became Assistance Secretary of the Navy in 1913. We all know they both were presidents! And both cousins had 6 children. Now that is a really similar life for both cousins. I also learned that FDR was able to build support for the war by introducing the 4 (very important) freedoms: 1. Freedom of Speech 2. Freedom of Worship 3. Freedom from fear 4. Freedom from want

  13. Something I learned about FDR is how he was so friendly and nice that a poor man could say "I didn't know him, but he knew me." He was such a good man.

  14. something I didn't know was that FDR basically said that he should stay in office because you shouldn't change leaders in the middle of a war but he said it better than I did (with a simile)

  16. "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." I already knew this, and it's a very well known quote, but a very good one.
